THE TIMELINE
70 YEARS OF QUIETLY POISONING YOUR FAMILY.
How Big Bathroom built a $300 billion industry on chemicals they knew were dangerous. Year by year. Decade by decade. Quietly. Profitably.
1955
PHTHALATES ENTER COSMETICS
DuPont begins commercial use of phthalates in personal care products. Marketed as 'softening agents.' No long-term studies. No FDA review. No disclosure to consumers.
1960s
CHLORINE BLEACHING BECOMES STANDARD
Toilet paper industry adopts chlorine bleaching to make paper 'whiter and more luxurious.' Same chemical family later linked to Agent Orange. Still standard practice today.
1980s
PFAS BECOMES INDUSTRY DEFAULT
3M and DuPont's PFAS chemicals become standard in toilet paper manufacturing for 'wet strength.' Internal documents later showed both companies knew PFAS was harmful by the 1970s. Sold anyway.
1995
EU BANS PHTHALATES IN COSMETICS
European Union begins phasing out phthalates in personal care products after research links them to fertility issues and hormone disruption. The US? Still legal. Still in your shampoo.
2005
SCIENTISTS WARN ABOUT DIOXINS
Peer-reviewed research confirms dioxin residue from chlorine-bleached toilet paper transfers to skin. The TP industry response: nothing. Manufacturing process unchanged for 20 years.
2024
PFAS FOUND IN 93% OF TP BRANDS
EPA-funded study tests every major US toilet paper brand for PFAS forever chemicals. 93% test positive. Including the 'eco-friendly' ones. Big TP's response: corporate silence.
